A laptop is a small mobile computer run on a battery or from an external AC/DC adapter that charges the battery while also supplying power to the computer itself. Laptops are becoming very popular these days as they are full-featured computer that could be easily used anywhere .

It is necessary to protect a laptop from being stolen. One can prevent a laptop theft by using locks, alarms, Software Recovery System (SRS) etc.

SRS are tracking utilities that connect periodically to a central server. The SRS can trace your laptop's location on the Internet and summon the local police to recover it.

Hard drive encryption is another way to protect a laptop from data loss Hard-drive encryption helps you protect your valuable business data in case your laptop does go missing. Windows Vista Enterprise and Ultimate editions include a drive-encryption feature called Bit Locker.

Bit Locker allows a flash drive to store the software's encryption keys. Bit Locker Drive Encryption is a full disk encryption feature included with Microsoft's Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 operating systems designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes.

Macs come with their own hard-drive encryption software, known as File Vault. Like Windows Vista's BitLocker, it secures the data on your drive from analytical eyes in the event that thieves get away with your laptop.File Vault uses encrypted file systems. The user's home directory is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and it encrypts the contents automatically during data communication.

Recovery Tags Service (RTS) in another way to protect a laptop theft. In Recovery Tags Service you have to register each item on the Web, with identifying information; afterward they contact you to arrange return if an item is found.
