Kefir: The Mysteries Of Kefir And Kefir Grains

Little is known regarding the mysterious miracle food called kefir. Kefir in simple terms is a creamy fermented or cultured beverage made from fermenting kefir grains in milk. It has a ton of health benefits from treating skin diseases, to lowering blood pressure to colon cancer and many many more. Its origin is unsure but dates back to thousands of years and proof of its popularity even then is evident in an account by Marco Polo in one of his expedition.

With all things mysterious, there comes with it a lot of hocus pocus. In this article we’ll dispel three of the common myths when it comes to kefir.

All bacteria is bad for you, so kefir is too
Before I was introduced to kefir, I used to think the same think. Come to think of it, it’s funny how advertisements we see around us can mould our way of thinking to plain ignorance. How they can make you believe that all bacteria is bad for you. We’re going to dispel that myth right now.
No. Not all bacteria is bad for you. There are good ones and there are bad ones. There are a lot of good bacteria in our bodies right now fighting off the harmful bacteria. We need good bacteria to survive and be healthy.
And if there is an antibiotic to kill off bacteria, then we have probiotic which makes bacteria live and flourish. Kefir is one type of probiotic. Another is yogurt.

Taking probiotic supplements or pills is better than consuming kefir
Even though most probiotic pill manufacturers advertise that taking one of their pills a day is better than consuming kefir, it is totally wrong. Studies have shown that the number of beneficial bacteria that a pill contains is miniscule when compared to the amount of good bacteria kefir contains. Some 500 times less than kefir that is.

Yogurt is still better than kefir
While eating yogurt is definitely good for you, there is no evidence that it is better than eating kefir. On the other hand, studies have shown that kefir has 5 times more friendly bacteria than the same amount of yogurt. And kefir bacteria are more diverse than its yogurt counterpart. This translates to more health benefits for kefir than yogurt. But as a consolation, yogurt is still better than probiotic supplements or pills.

In conclusion, kefir is not the most well-known food product out there. Thorough research into it can open your eyes to the wonders that is Kefir.
