Technology has come a long way in advancing the keyword analysis tools now available for internet marketers working on the internet.
The way that you perform keyword analysis is that you use specific keyword tools which will show you the amount of times a keyword is searched. So for example if you type in used cars the keyword will show you all the variations that you can use.
When you plan a new website, you want to take your main keyword phrase (which should represent the theme of the site), and break it up into sub-phrases that have less competition. You can do this with Google's external keyword tool. When you get the tool on your screen just entering your keyword phrase in the box to the right, then hit the "Get keyword ideas" button.
You can compare these with Google demand by typing the same keyword into Google and checking the bar stating the number of results for that keyword. What this analysis tells you are the number of people using that keyword in their search, and how many web pages appear in the search. You want a high number using the keyword, and a low number of results.
Long tailed keywords can be the best keywords to go after. First these keywords are a lot more specific and hence the traffic trickling to your website may be ultra targetted. Let me explain with an example,

Keyword research also allows you to determine the level of competition you face. More popular keywords such as dog training can require considerably more effort to be in the top 3 of the search engines. However, keywords such as how to house train a dog may only require a couple of one way back links in order well in the search engines.
Once click search for the amount of AdWords Ads that are triggered for that particular keyword. Yes, a good tool will be able to tell you, with one click, whether trying an AdWords campaign for that keyword is a good idea or not. No free keyword analysis tool will do that for you.
To get on the first page, you need to have a highly relevant informative site and choose keywords with reasonable demand with relatively few competitors, unless your site is old, large and information rich.
Wordtracker is not perfect but the most accurate on a consistent basis. The main theme should be analysing how many times your keyword has been searched for on average and I use the Google 24 hour predict option in wordtracker to simply determine the popularity of a keyword. If your main keyword gets only 1 search per day then it might be best to look at other keywords that have more potential.
