Kids And Yoga. The Perfect Activity For The Over-scheduled Child.

How many activities are your children involved in right now? Children nowadays are usually so over-scheduled and stressed out that when get home the only thing left for them to do is eat and sleep and of course try and fit in homework, even adults themselves have lighter schedules. What do I mean? Well first there is school with about eight - nine classes a day, which has their brains sometimes working overtime to understand everything that is being thought, plus you cannot forget that the competition in classes is usually very tight if they want a decent position. Also within school time with academics there is also P.E. and gym class and when school is finished there is football, basketball, swimming, music, dance practice/class to attend, sometimes more than one and when they finally get there is still homework plus studying just in case there is a pop quiz the next day.

A bit much I must say myself, where is the relaxation time, the time to breeze and free body and mind. Well this is where yoga comes into play. Yoga is properly known for its relaxation abilities and also its cleansing nature. For a kid this would mean better body awareness, improved self control, flexibility and co-ordination, all of which do not only apply to class but also the rest of their daily routines especially the physical.

Yoga has been known in kids to curb the over hyperactive nature that some children possess while on the other end brightening up the more somber ones. Children today crave movement and sensory motor stimuli that can help then balance out their inner souls flow, since they are always on the move anyway, give them something to do with the energy. Two particularly perfect poses are the warrior pose and tree pose since they instill in them calm, confidence and balance.

There is a trick in it as well since getting most children to stay in one position for more than a few minutes if that long is almost impossible. What is it? Children are naturally inquisitive; you just have to feed that nature by making comparisons of the poses to things that seem appealing to them while still teaching them the essence. Another plus is that if done in a group or with a partner fosters the beginning levels of teamwork and trust with others.

Every experience will be different, and as mentioned before getting a child to originally begin can be a task, some more advisable ideas are to utilize visualizations, more thinking of sometime they really like while keeping their eyes closed. For boys it can be a girlfriend or girl they like, sports, videogames whatever works since males tend to be less responsive at a young age to something like meditation.

You may also have them focus out on belly breathing first and have them listen to soothing and relaxing music. Then ask them to imagine their favorite spot in the house or let them think that they are in outer space floating, or let them visualize that they are at the beach, playing their favorite sport or doing the best activity that they like.

Most importantly as a parent what you can do at end of the sessions is ask they child how they felt, what there experience was like, have they share with you and the group.

Yoga is really an amazing thing and in the hands of child can be just what they need to relax form their busy schedule, to help them concentrate in class or on the field of play, or to improve their grades or game. As a parent it is something you should look into.
