Kitting Out Your Home With The Latest Security Devices And Hardware

Your home may well be more at risk to thieves than you realize, or perhaps you have already been hit be thieves, unfortunately they have a habit of coming back to the same places, often as soon as you have had time to replace your stolen possessions. Unless you want to see your insurance premiums go through the roof then make sure your home is properly secured and secured in every way, massive locks on your front door that take 8 hours to pick are no good if you simply have a latch on your back door, maybe that seems like an exaggeration but many homes aren’t very much more secure than this.

Doors be they side doors, back doors or of course front doors need to be well made and well attached to the frame, this means a few good hinges ideally at least three and locks in ideally three places top middle and bottom so thieves can’t simply kick the bottom of your door until it gives. Make sure though that the frame is also well secured to your building, rather than simply attached with glue or screws: it really really should be imbedded otherwise all that will happen is a thief will kick in your door and it will take the frame with it: it makes no odds to a hit and run thief who will climb in amidst the mess and noise they are making grab a few choice items and then make a run for it before the police can turn up. If you are secluded of course then the noise won't even be heard by anyone and they can take their time.

Windows have the same problem as doors in that they can be knocked or kicked in and often it is the frame that goes. Many homes will simply have single glazed windows which a thief will have no qualms about smashing. Old windows too often have major flaws in and many types still very common on older homes can be easily opened with a credit card or coat hanger slid into a gap.

Modern UPVC windows have glass that won't simply smash and solid frames that can be built into the wall, locks on handles too also make it difficult to simply move the handle from the outside. If you do have to keep old windows perhaps because of conservation orders on older buildings you could add locks to handles to make them a little more secure.

Electronic security devices include alarms of course but also security lighting and security cameras. Security lighting is a first line of defense to stop people trying to get into your home in the first place by stopping them from having somewhere to hide in the dark while they pick locks. Alarms usually aim to stop thieves once they get in but work best when they go off while they are still trying to get in by being on tamper proof locks. Security cameras of course are there mainly to try and catch thieves once they have been and gone with your property but are also a major deterrent.
