I have a very good friend who is an Interior Designer and she has a saying that she lives by; “if you do the research, the answer will come”. In other words, know about all of your options before you buy! Since most homes already come with a built-on deck or porch of some kind then it is up to you to know what else you can do to make it shine.
While most people know they want to place a grill and outdoor furniture on the deck, it’s a good idea to find those things that can both protect and decorate the deck itself. One of those things is to make sure and seal your deck at least every other year with a good outdoor sealer. The other is to invest in good quality post caps to seal the top of the posts from water and insect damage.
The great thing about post caps is they not only protect your deck posts but can bring some unique qualities to your overall décor. You can go simple with wood caps and a wooden finial combination up to a line or low voltage system and even get solar caps, all of which will light up your outdoor space.
You will need to know that a post cap is different from a finial and are sold as separate items. I have had a couple of occasions where people have been angry at my suggestion and thought for the price of the cap they would get the cap and finial and that is not the way they are sold. Post caps can be used on their own while finials are designed to be put atop a post cap.
