Kathryn Bigelow scored the new history in the movie world. She was the first woman who could get an award for the best movie director throughout 82 years of Oscar history. She won the award through her film by the title 'The Hurt Locker'. That film was the film that took Iraq war as the background.

This award could treat the disappointment of three woman filmmakers who had failed to break through Oscar nomination. They were Lina Wertmuller in 1975 ('Seven Beauties'), Jane Campion in 1993 ('The Piano'), and Sofia Coppola in 2003 ('Lost in Translation').

Her victory also became a satire for movies with big budget that broke through Oscar nomination. Just with US$ 11 millions, her film could defeat 'Avatar', a phenomenal film that was directed by James Cameron. The production budget of this film was US$ 300 millions.

'The Hurt Locker' (2008) was successful to get six awards for the best movie, the best movie director, the best movie script writer, the best movie redaction, the best sound redaction, and the best sound. This film could break through Oscar after going from one festival to another festival.

Through the award, Bigelow proved many things. She proved not only about the quality of a woman filmmaker, but also about the big chance of an independent movie with minimum budget to get an award for the best movie in the world.

In this case, 'The Hurt Locker' as a war drama with fast beat was her eighth movie. Indeed, Kathryn Bigelow who was born in California in 1951 had made several indie movies that told about the social problems in the society. Through her films, she commented about this world.

Her seven movies were 'The Loveless' (1982), 'Near Dark' (1987), 'Blue Steel' (1990), 'Point Break' (1991), 'Strange Days' (1995), 'The Weight of Water' (2000), and 'K-19: The Widowmaker' (2002). Her most popular movie was 'Point Break', a film that was starred by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

She began her carrier as an artist and a librarian. Then, she improved her interest to cinematography by joining education in Colombia University. Today, she is noted as a lecturer of California Art Institute.
