Our face is always the center of attraction in our whole personality unless and until we have done something absurd or hilarious to our selves. Lips, on the other hand become the focal point by being the only colored part of our face.

Lip balm, which is often called lip salve, is used to get away with the lip problems like angular cheilitis, cold sores or to relieve chapped or dry lips. Lip balm, however with it’s all of cosmetic properties is only applied to the lips of the mouth.

What is it made of?
Different ingredients like beeswax, petroleum jelly, camphor, menthol etc are used to make lip balms. In order to make it healthier for the lips, companies are offering lip balms with the addition of vitamins, alum, salicylic acid and aspirin, which is peculiar to the skin type. Octinoxate and avobenone are also used in lip bun in order to minimize the effect of sun damage.

How Does it Work?
Lips, as the have the thin skin layer, are most volatile to external dryness and therefore, lips become the very first victim of the dryness by getting chapped. Lip balm is used to save lips from dryness; it basically provides an oily or occlusive layer on the lips surface. It captures the internal moisture of lips and protects them from the external cold and dry environment. That oily layer of lip balm which is usually made up of waxes and petroleum jelly serves the basic purpose of holding moisture in the lips. Different flavors, colors and sunscreens are added to lip balm in order to provide additional benefits to the users.

There are usually two different types of lip balms available in the market. These include”

Flavored Lip Balm:
The flavored lip balms are perhaps the most popular form of lip balms by now. They come in hundreds of different flavors. Starting from the fruits to peppermint and chocolate, all types of flavors are covered under the Flavored Lip Balms. Their basic purpose is to be used by a normal human. The basic purpose of these is to provide the individual with soft and soothing lips. They are found in pocket of every second American man and in purse of every American woman.

There were many different companies in USA alone who were manufacturing lip balms. Nevertheless, the most famous company to date is known as “chapstick”. This brand name is not only popular in America only; in fact it is the most popular lip balm “brand name” in world. These days, no matter whatever the make of lip balm is, it is always called as “chapstick”, instead of being called lip balm.

Medical Lip Balm:
Another type of lip balm is called medical lip balm. Medical lip balm is usually made by different pharmaceutical companies, which help to provide a friendly solution for chapped or dry lips. They hardly come in flavors and should only be used if prescribed by the doctor. However, if you have dry lips you can always use the flavored lip balm.
