Lab Safety Tips - Stay Safe And Sounds As Always

Following laboratory safety guidelines is very important, not only for your safety, but for the safety of everyone around you as well. This is more important in an educational institution. To make things always safe and effective, you must follow this simple guidelines that can help you make everything fun and at the same time very safe.

Graduated Cylinders

Learn the procedure on how to fill a graduated cylinder in order to make things as easy as possible. If holding the cylinder in the hand while filling it with liquid, slow down the stream before you reach the desired fill level and place the cylinder on a level surface to finish filling it. After which you must add the liquid as slow as possible to the graduated cylinder and monitor the volume transferred by leveling your eye to the calibration. Minor lapses in measurements when it comes to laboratories can cause the entire procedure to self-destruct. Always remember to maintain a distance of one to two feet from the cylinder in order remove any possibility to getting burned by hot materials or worse inhaling poisonous chemicals. Avoid those fumes by staying away from the cylinder whenever you're done transferring poisonous substances and other hazardous chemicals. However, because you are at eye level with potentially harmful liquids, always wear safety glasses in case it breaks or spills.

Mercury Safety

-One of the most dangerous substances today is mercury, a chemical which can cause numerous bad effects to humans if actually taken in amounts beyond human tolerance.

-If possible, use an alcohol thermometer instead of a mercury one. -Avoid using that mercury, instead use chemical substitutes in order to remain safe as always.

-Mercury exhaust from a bubbler needs to be vented into a fume hood.

-Always use a glass, plastic, or steel tray when handling mercury so that spills are contained immediately. Choose a tray that does not react poorly with mercury.

-Always place a container with mercury inside into a second container as a backup in case the first one fails.

-Do not allow mercury to come into contact with hot surfaces that may cause it to vaporize.

Other General Lab Rules

-Do not eat or drink anything found in the lab because it could be contaminated with something harmful.

-Always check the labels carefully so that potentially harmful chemicals do not get mixed or touched.

-Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with potentially hazardous materials.

-Wear clothing that covers the skin so that the legs, feet, and arms, are not exposed in case of a spill. Also, make sure that the clothing is not lose so that it does not get caught in any machines or knock anything over.

-Always keep the work area free of things that are not needed for that particular task.

-Never ever use your mouth as a suction tool to transfer liquid.

-After finishing in the lab, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid contaminating food and skin.
