Labour To Govern Australia

Julia Gillard became Australia's first woman prime minister promised a stable the government. Australia's new minority party ended a two week standoff between Labour who won 72 seats and the Coalition who seals 73 seats during the August 2010 election.

Two independent MPs Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott held the balance of power and agreed to have agreed to join Ms Gillard's Labour Party. Mr Abbott the leader of the Coalition party informed reporters he would respect the outcome, despite his having won one more seat than Ms Gillard.

Their decision gives the Labour party a minority party control of 76 seats in the 150 seat House of Representatives and avoids the Australian people going back to the polls.

How will new minority Labour government affect potential migrants seeking to move to Australia? Julia Gillard has responded by naming Chris Bowen the new Australian immigration minister. He has identified a trend of new immigrants enrolling on a wide range of vocational courses in order to gain Australian residency.

He plans to replace the current list of 106 skill in demand and to review the entire points test and replace it with a strategy geared towards attracting more targeted skill occupations.

The support also means Ms Gillard can go ahead with the parties plans to introduce a 30% tax on iron ore who are thought to be the biggest polluters in Australia. This may have a negative effect on the strong iron ore market in Western Australia.
