Lapband Myths

Like any other weight loss surgery, LapBand surgery has several myths surrounding it. We decided to find the most prevalent myths about the surgery and recovery and let you know the truth.

1. LapBand Is an Easy Way to Lose Weight. Any decision to lose weight and make your lifestyle healthier is a big commitment. LapBand surgery does not change your life overnight, instead, it is a tool for people who tried diet and exercise, but could not get the results they need. LapBand offers a safe and effective way to help you lose weight.

2. Surgery Prevents Proper Nutrition. Your LapBand surgeon and doctor will give you important instructions to follow after the surgery to make sure you get the correct amount of daily vitamins and other nutrients within your new dietary restrictions. Since you will be eating smaller meals, it is important those meals are properly balanced. Unlike gastric bypass, LapBand surgery does not change the way your body absorbs nutrients, it only makes your stomach smaller to help you feel satisfied sooner.

3. All Weight Lost with LapBand Surgery Will Return. LapBand surgery is a commitment to changing the way you eat and exercise. If you continue to eat as you did before the surgery, you will not be able to keep the weight off and you will be very uncomfortable. However, developing new eating and exercising habits along with following your doctor’s directions will help you lose the weight and keep it off.

4. Patients Are Stuck with Liquid Diets Forever. While your doctor will keep you on a liquid diet for the first few days to a week after surgery, you will be able to move back to solid foods. The goals for LapBand patients are eating small, balanced meals and achieving a full feeling.

5. Surgery Results in Unhealthy Weight Loss. Patients generally lose between 1 and 2 pounds a week depending on their pre-surgery weight. .

6. Follow Up Is Not Important. Your follow up appointments are almost as important as the surgery itself. During this time, you will work with a doctor to change your old habits and shape new, better ones. Changing your old lifestyle is the only way to lose the weight.

7. Very Obese People Cannot Benefit from LapBand Surgery. People are considered very obese, or morbidly obese, when they have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more. LapBand surgery is safe and effective for most morbidly obese people.

8. Patients Cannot Become Pregnant After LapBand Surgery. Women are able to become pregnant after LapBand surgery, but their doctors may suggest they wait until weight loss has stabilized. This will give patients the best chance to become pregnant.

9. LapBand Cannot Relieve Obesity-Related Health Issues. Studies have shown that problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and sleep apnea are reduced or completely resolved with significant weight loss.

10. Patients Have a Lower Quality of Life with LapBand. This weight loss surgery has been shown to increase quality of life because it eases mobility issues, reduces obesity-related health problems and gives patients the feeling of satisfaction after a meal.
