Laptop Computers: Offering A Different Way To Compute
In terms of performance compared to desktop computers, laptop computers are usually more expensive than desktop computers for the same performance level. One of the key reasons why laptop computers are typically more expensive is because notebooks are made of smaller components, and because these components are smaller, they cost slightly more to produce. Fortunately, costs have substantially decreased through recent years as the technology has become cheaper to produce. Laptops have several benefits aside from portability though, such as being an all inclusive system. Unlike desktops, notebooks have the display monitor, keyboard, and speaker system all included with the laptop. Furthermore, laptops use much less power than desktop computers. Not only does this save energy, but it also means that laptop computers run much quieter than their desktop counterparts. While notebooks have many advantages, they also have several disadvantages. While the prices of laptops have fallen through recent years, they still remain more expensive than desktop computers. Furthermore, there are limits to the upgradability of laptops in comparison to desktops. Usually, only the hard drive and memory can be easily upgraded for notebooks, whereas desktops have much more freedom. Having a portable battery also means that in many situations, this portable battery must be replaced every few years due to battery atrophy. When it comes to purchasing laptop computers, consumers have many different brand options to choose from. Prominent laptop brands include Acer, Apple, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba. However, there are countless other brands which make notebooks. A recent study found that of the leading laptop brands, ASUS computers failed the least. In order to compensate for the fact that laptop computers usually have parts that require replacement after several years of use, many manufacturers offer extended warranties for users to purchase. For example, aside from the one year standard warranty that comes with the purchase of a Mac, Apple offers consumers the option to purchase two additional years of AppleCare. Notebooks have revolutionized how computing is done. Visit any workplace or educational institution and it is not rare to find hundreds of notebooks being used to achieve basic computing needs. As technology continues to evolve, laptops will likely play a prominent role for the future of computing.
