If you are the only leader in your organization, and everyone looks to you for decisions, then you are really managing. Leaders understand the concept of raising up other leaders and empowering people.

If there isn’t anybody else in your business right now, who could step up and fill your shoes, then you are not a leader, you are a manager. We see this far too often in business, where managers won’t fully equip their team to lead the organization, usually out of fear of being replaced. They think if someone can do their job just as good as they can, then there is no need for them. Being a leader, means you understand the importance of being replaceable, because you want the business to be a success with or without you. In other words, experienced leaders put themself in a position for promotion by making sure there are plenty of leaders who can fill their role at any given moment.

If you can execute the daily activities, and maintain performance, but are challenged when redirecting the team with a new vision or goal, then leadership is not your strength. I have witnessed this countless times, where a person gets out of the gate running and achieves immediate results, only to see progress come to an abrupt halt. Usually this happens because a person is more focused in the beginning of a business on operations and producing personal results. Then, they find themselves in the challenging position of working with and inspiring others to achieve similar results. Duplicating your efforts requires leadership skills, and learning how to develop those skills in others.

1. Invest Time & Resources Into Developing Leaders. The mindset of typical management fails in this area, because of fear of not being needed or being the person of importance. Leaders know that to multiply their efforts and results, they are looking for other leaders, not followers. Leaders understand that lasting success of any business relies upon not their own talents, but by creating a legacy. Raising up leaders puts an organization in a position for continual growth, far exceeding your individual contribution.

2. Invest In Your Best People. Managers make the mistake by wasting time with those who demand their time and attention, usually being the weakest players. Follow the 80/20 rule, and invest in your strongest team members or those who have the most leadership potential. When you develop more leaders, you have a larger selection of people who can teach and train the weaker members.

Succession is a major difference between leadership vs management. Managing your business will limit your impact to only those you personally touch. You are only one person, and one person can add business one account, or one person at a time. However, leadership development causes multiplication, through influencing a larger population you otherwise would not have access to. Managers maintain operations, but leaders can cause explosive growth. True security is obtained when leaders invest in their best, and prepare their team members to succeed them.
