Leadership
Leadership in an organizational role involves (1) establishing a clear vision, (2) sharing (communicating) that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, (3) providing the information, knowledge, and methods to realize that vision, and (4) coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members or stakeholders.
Leadership skills for today's World:
A leader comes to the forefront in case of crisis, and is able to think and act in creative ways in difficult situations. Unlike management, leadership management flows from the core of a personality and cannot be taught, although it may be learnt and may be enhanced through coaching or mentoring.
Leadership is probably one of the carry-over behaviours from our primate History. In the animal world, a leader is the strongest, the fastest or the physically superior one. Often, the leader would have many female companions.
All our life we may have been told that leaders are born and skills of leadership are passed on through genes. We have seen some remarkable exceptions to this rule even in the history books and as we move ahead, we will see that even more often.
The new mantra for leadership skills is the ability of a leader to lead. It is not solely determined by his genealogy. Any body can be a leader today if he demonstrates his leadership qualities and if he can attract a group to follow his ideas.
The Five Ps of Leadership:
There are whole libraries full of things that tell you what to do about leadership and how to remember what’s important. Here’s another short edition to that library – the 5 P’s of leadership. They are:
• Pay Attention to What’s Important
• Praise What You Want to Continue
• Punish What You Want to Stop
• Pay for the Results You Want
• Promote the People Who Deliver Those Result
A good leader must have the discipline to work toward his or her vision single-mindedly, as well as to direct his or her actions and those of the team toward the goal. Action is the mark of a leader. A leader does not suffer “analysis paralysis” but is always doing something in pursuit of the vision, inspiring others to do the same.
