To have success in any business, and real success in life you must be a leader. This doesn't mean pretending to be someone else, or changing your core values, it's just about being more confident in who you are. It's about applying a very simple 5 step process, and all you have to do is keep applying it until your view of yourself and others' perception of you begins to shift.
1. Have a Vision
All great leaders start with a vision. The vision must be strong enough that they would refuse to be distracted or ever give it up. They will follow their vision determinedly as they know there is no other acceptable outcome. Others are magnetized to the leader as they can see that this is someone who knows where they are going. This is paramount to your leadership. Without a solid vision for your future people cannot follow you as you won't be going anywhere.
2. Find and Learn a Good System
To effect any change in your life you must apply a system with a consistent and effective effort. If your goal is to become very fit and healthy you follow a diet plan or an exercise plan. These are just systems to get you to a specific outcome. The shortest distance between two points is a line. A definate and effective system will move you from A to B much faster than if you continually change directions.
3. Add Value
If you don't add value you have nothing to offer someone. If you don't have more knowledge about or more capabilities for getting from A to B than the next person, they have no reason to join you. They will look to the next person who does bring something to the table. Adding value is simple: education. Learn everything you can and never give up your education. You will never have every solution or answer so you have to always learn, keep up to date and on top of the latest knowledge in your area.
4. Give That Value to Others
The real secret to leadership is that giving value away adds to your own value instead of decreasing it. When you are giving others good information and knowledge, and not looking for them to give you anything in return, you become more and more of a leader to those people. You will have confidence in the abundance of information, prospects, wealth, etc around you and know that helping other people is really helping yourself.
5. Expect To Create New Leaders in Your Followers
Your followers will not achieve success themselves until they too become leaders. Teach them about the 5 steps to become a leader, point out any tools, resources, or education that can assist them, but step back and let them find a vision of their own. Expect leadership and vision from them, and allow them to stop following you when they are ready.
For many this process is organic and just happens naturally, but if you find that you feel like a constant follower, take these 5 steps and you will become a true leader.
