Learn Digital Photography .. The Power Of Black And White Photography

It is said that everything comes around full circle, creating a cycle. This is most certainly the case with reemergence of blank and white photography onto the scene. Why is black and white photography becoming en vogue again in a world that so emphasizes color? Despite the incredible popularity of digital photography in general, and creation of color images in particular, there will always be room for black and white.

But that was certainly not the case. Over the years we have seen black and white take on a new artistic value in both genres. In fact, it is not at all unusual any more to see a very modern movie filmed entirely in black and white. It is also common to visit a fine art museum and find a photographic art display that uses black and white extensively. Black and white has some artistic and emotional qualities that are just not possible to achieve in color photography.

The most important factor in photography is the feeling it invokes in the viewer. Black and white photography has this emotional power. Even the most unassuming of shots can take on new depth and meaning emotionally with the subtle nuances the black and white format can provide. Be the ability to convey the unspoken word, black and white photos almost instantly take on an artistic look. Incorporating black and white techniques into your portfolio will add variety to your work and can improve your skills as a photographer.

Black and white also focuses the eye on the emotional center of the piece. Probably the best subject for black and white photography is the human face. In even a tranquil expression, the viewer can see such a vast range of expression in the eyes, the tilt of the head, the subtle wrinkles or peculiarities of the face and the focus of the gaze.

Black and white almost always invites the viewer to want to know about the story behind the picture. If it's a landscape, "What happened here?" is the question that often springs to the mind of the viewer and the longer they gaze at the photo, the more their imagination fills in the details. If you are viewing the face of a serene or melancholy girl, it is almost impossible not to wonder what she is dreaming about or what of life's issues is weighing on her mind.

While emotional power and invoking the search for meaning makes for compelling reasons to incorporate black and white photography into one's portfolio alone, the romance of the genre is most certainly another. Black-and-white photography speaks to the simplicity and elegance that love often is. It has the ability to capture the thread of emotion and passion that touches the heart. A picture that might be considered lewd by the harshness of color, becomes an art form in the more subtle shadings of black and white. Try surroundings that incorporate moisture or water such as the beach, or the rain, or even the dew drops of early morning to bring about feelings of sensuality to the viewer.

An experienced black and white photographer has developed the ability to live in a world choosing when to and more importantly when not to see color. With practice, you can find these skills within yourself and have a whole new second world opened up before your camera's lens. Digital photography techniques have provided a new generation for the art of black and white photography. From a newborn's first photograph, to a new bride's gaze into her future, black and white photography has made a reemergence due to the emotional impact it makes in contrast to its color filled counterpart.

It be worth the time to learn how to capture the powerful images that black and white photography can create. With a little know how and creativity, black and white adapts very well to the editing abilities available in Photoshop to help highlight the emotion within the photograph. You will in no time be able to see the world in black and white from behind the camera lens giving you a whole new world of possibilities in photography.
