Learn About Fish Capsules
First, the contaminant content must be considered. Mercury and PCBs are the two most common contaminants. It is possible to test for contaminants down to the parts per billion or even trillion. There are still some oils on the planet that are free of any detectable level of mercury or PCBs. They’re just not that easy to find. Most parts of the Atlantic Ocean have high levels of mercury, due primarily to coal-fired electric plants. Researchers for the USGS have recently measured mercury levels in streams and rivers across the US. They’ve also measured the species of fish that live in those waters. All of them had some level of mercury. In order to remove mercury and PCBs, molecular distillation must be used. Molecular distillation concentrates the omega-3 content, but it also reduces some portion of the oils that have anti-inflammatory activity. Do fish capsules really have anti-inflammatory activity? In the US, manufacturers are not allowed to mention the anti-inflammatory activity, because that would make the supplements drugs and they would have to be regulated differently. But, research indicates that the supplements are effective for reducing the pain and morning stiffness associated with arthritis. They have found in the test tube that some supplements have as much anti-inflammatory activity as aspirin. They have seen in animal studies and clinical evaluations that omega-3s prevent inflammatory molecules from passing through the arterial walls and causing inflammation in the surrounding tissues. So, “yes”. Fish capsules do have anti-inflammatory activity. The degree varies. Concentrated, molecularly distilled oils have more anti-inflammatory activity than non-concentrated or “regular” oils. Adding natural triglycerides to the concentrated oils doubles the anti-inflammatory activity, according to one study. So, if you are careful about what brand you choose, you can expect to reduce inflammation throughout your body. Why is that important? Although acute inflammation that occurs in response to an injury or infection is a critical function of the immune system, chronic inflammation damages the tissues, fibers, joints and all of the cells of the body. It is sometimes referred to as “silent” inflammation, because it doesn’t cause pain. The best fish capsules reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, type II diabetes, arthritis and other diseases, by reducing inflammation, which plays a role in all of those conditions. So, when you go shopping for a supplement, you want one that has a high degree of anti-inflammatory activity. You want one that is free of any detectable level of contaminants, like mercury. And, you also want one that is guaranteed to be burp-free, because fishy tasting burps are a sign of rancid oils. Now, you can go shopping for fish capsules, because you have the knowledge that you need. Enjoy!
