Learn Before You Spam!

The first thing I learned was, get a list of people and send email to them. That sounded easy enough. I didn’t have a list, but I found a website that was selling email lists. I bought 1 million email addresses for $100.

Bingo! I had a list of 1 million people
I could send email to...

Or so I thought.

I bought a piece of software that allowed me to send email from my desktop and I was in business. I loaded 50,000 email addresses into my desktop mailing system just before I went to bed that evening. I could hardly sleep thinking about the money pouring into my bank account.

I was on my way to the big time..I thought.

The next morning, I ran down to my computer to check my ClickBank account, but I couldn’t get online. I thought my internet provider must be having problems, so I ate my breakfast, brushed my teeth and ran back down to my office to try again. I still couldn’t get online, so I called my internet provider. They told me…

…my account had been shut down for spam!

I didn’t even know what spam was. So they explained that I had sent out bulk email and received 36 spam complaints. I felt like a bulldozer ran over me. They cancelled my internet connection and wouldn’t reopen my account until I signed a 10 page contract stating that I would not send out bulk email and they would only open my account after I paid a $500 deposit and an additional $250 to reopen my account. The whole process took 12 days. 12 excruciatingly long and painful days.

But I bounced back…

After my first spam experience, I decided to find people who already knew what they were doing online and plug into their systems.

The difficulty was, in 2001, there weren’t as many successful people online as there are today. So I searched high and low to find people who actually knew what they were talking about.

I ended up talking to lots of people who were willing to share their “knowledge” but very few actually had any experience. Most people I talked to were like magicians with smoke and mirrors. They had quite a stage performance, but no substance.

Finally, I found people I could trust. They taught me how to run a proper business online. And I made my first sale!

My first sale was $10, but it felt like $1 million!

If you’re still waiting to make your first sale online, I can’t even begin to describe the feeling of opening your ClickBank or PayPal account and seeing money in there. When I made my first sale, I jumped up from my chair and ran around the house screaming like a little girl. Luckily, no one was home at the time. LOL.

Fast forward to today…

Since my meagre beginnings, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from hundreds of hugely successful entrepreneurs.
