Learning Disability Testing- Diagnosing A Child With Learning Disabilities, But What Next?
Learning disability testing is a highly divisive question among teachers and medical professionals across the world. Yet diagnosing learning disabilities remains an underlying aspect of helping children who are struggling in the classroom, allowing us to aim for the difficulties and treat them.
What countless parents do not understand is that learning disability testing is strongly influenced by individual practitioners and their areas of study, prejudices and predisposed concepts. For example, a doctor who specializes in nutrition will at all times look for, and very often find a nutrition base for a child with learning disabilities. An education based specialist will find education problems and reasons when diagnosing learning disabilities, and so on.
As a Behavioral Optometrist, I clearly have a bias towards visual based trouble when it comes to learning disability testing. In my defense, 80% of all information in the classroom comes in by way of the visual system, so I imagine that vision should be a major consideration when diagnosing learning disabilities.
Nevertheless, the genuine question is, “Can treating visual problems in a child with learning disabilities produce improvement in their learning capability?”
This, to me, is the true issue, and I appreciate it is the central question for most parents. I don’t consider it is enough to carry out learning disability testing, shape a diagnosis and then turn the child and their parents away with just a label to demonstrate for it! Diagnosing learning disabilities is straightforward: helping to triumph over these difficulties is the hardest part of all!
In a world that is so geared up to label, so all set to ply our children with drugs, so keen to install special reading programs which see the child continue to struggle, surely there is a place for the child with learning disabilities to gain some sensible, effective help!
This is where vision can play a chief role, not merely in learning disability testing but more especially in the treatment of the child with learning disabilities.
