Legends Of Diwali Festival

There are numerous tales, stories and legends connected with Diwali festival. The mythological references and religious scriptures clearly signifies that Deepavali or the “festival of light” is about purification of mind and body and awareness about ones inner self. As the festival of victory of the good over evil, the Deepavali festival also heralds the message of peace, joy, brotherhood and harmony among all sections of the society.

Tale from Great Epic Mahabharata : Return of Pandavas


There is an another tale from the epic Mahabharata, associated with the celebrations of Diwali festival. As per the legend Pandavas (five sons of King Pandu) were defeated in the hands of the Kauravas (cousin brothers of Pandavas) at the game of dice (gambling). According to the epic it was 'Kartik Amavashya' on which Pandavas returned from their 12 years of exile. To express love and concern the people of Pandava's Kingdom lit earthen lamps and celebrated their return.
