Let's Get Real About Certifications!

I recently started a new business providing computer repair services in the Greater Cincinnati area, and I have come to learn a thing or two about certifications. I believe that it is important to get real with regard to certifications – are they really all that they are cut up to be? In general I would say yes; however, hands down I would hire someone with experience over someone with just a certification.

While Microsoft certifications can require you have to have at least one year of practical experience before pursuing a certification, especially an engineer type of certification. I wish this type of requirement extended to all of Microsoft’s certifications, as technical experience plays a more valuable role in determining a candidate’s proficiency in a particular technology.

It is important to note that a certification really only sets an individual up to “sell” the particular product at hand. For example, the difference between an MCSA and an MCSE is money and how ridiculous you are willing to be. To receive an MCSE you need to solve enterprise issues by having an unlimited budget at hand and only using Microsoft products. How many of you would solve the need for a firewall solution with a Microsoft product? Or a network routing issue with a Microsoft software solution?

There are tremendous benefits to certification though. A candidate’s willingness to pursue a certification demonstrates a future employee’s aptitude and personal technological leanings, and this helps future employer’s gauge the value of a prospective employee and their abilities.

If you are looking for a new job, today’s job market demands that you accent your resume with some appropriate certifications. Otherwise, prospective employers may just pass you by for someone who has the better appearance of skills!
