Libby Skala

Since the start of October, Nuvo Hotel Suites has been running a contest for visiting creatives. The rules are simple, send us an application detailing what your project is and how it will help the city of Calgary, and if you are selected you win complimentary accommodation here at the Nuvo for the duration of your visit to the city. The very first winner of the Visiting Creatives Contest is Libby Skala for her play Lilia!, that was hosted by Fire Exit Theatre.

Some people's lives are truly worth celebrating. Lillia Skala, born 1896 and died 1994, was the first female architect in Vienna, a Lilia Skalarefugee from the Third Reich, a worker in a zipper factory, and a Golden Globe and Oscar nominated actress of the stage, television and the silver screen. This last month her granddaughter, Libby Libby SkalaSkala, has been acting in a one-woman show that chronicles her amazing and eventful life. From receiving one of the first degrees in Architecture and Engineering from The University of Dresden to fleeing Nazi-controlled Austria and receiving the nominations for her role in Lilies of the Field while working at a Lost and Found desk, Libby illustrates an intricate and inspiring life with passion and poise. She's already brought her play Lilia! to audiences in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto and in Edinburgh and Germany (earning rave reviews each time) and now she's brought it here to Calgary. For information about her show you can check out the Fire Exit Theatre and for more information about Libby Skala you can check out her site at http://www.libbyskala.com/.

Jonathan Meier is the Marketing and Social Media Coordinator for Nuvo Hotel Suites. He has received a degree in Communications Studies from the University of Calgary and is now, miraculously, employed in a related field. When he's not at the Hotel dealing with the daily dose of craziness he's usually out in the mountains near his hometown of Canmore where he can be seen climbing, skiing, or doing anything at all that doesn't involve computers.
