The importance of lifting equipments at workplace can't be over exemplified. With the growing concerns about industrial safety, it is important that factories and major construction houses facilitates workers with proper equipments required for different purposes. Lifting equipment are of paramount importance in today’s' parlance. Lifting equipment are necessary for the purpose of rising, lowering and shifting objects of considerable weight that are beyond human means. Facilitation of lifting equipment is essential in every industrial undertaking and is a mandatory requirement as per guidelines issued by The Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipments Regulations issued in 1998. The regulations mostly apply on equipments like cranes, slings, hooks, shackles and the like. Common industrial lifting equipments include hydraulic cranes, drum lifters, lifting tables, bucket elevator and the like. Their application varies depending on the purpose of use. Bucket elevators are mostly used to lift food grain materials like rice, pulses and other granular substances. Precautionary measures have to be adopted regarding maintenance of lifting equipment. Without proper maintenance, lifting equipments are susceptible to corrosion and fracture. Regular wear and tear makes these equipments ductile and brittle. Such equipments are prone to mechanical failure and in most cases is major cause of industrial accidents. These are mainly employed in chemical laboratories. On the other hand, equipments like cranes are used for the purpose of lifting heavy weight industrial objects. While using lifting equipments, one must doubly ensure that these are not overloaded. In most cases, overloading of lifting equipments pose out to be the major cause of industrial accidents. Precautions have to be adopted so that chances of slips and toppling over are reduced. Fatigue happens to be one of the fatal errors which are difficult to be detected. These errors may totally retard the functionality of the machines. Periodic inspection of lifting equipments is essential so as to prevent these hazards. In most cases, lifting equipments are exposed to errors like bad design, improper maintenance, improper manufacturing process, assembling errors and imprudent selection of its base material. Steps should be adopted by maintenance personnel so as to avoid these issues from cropping up. One of the most important factors to be borne in mind while using lifting equipments is verification of the device with the accessories being used. The accessories should be compatible enough with the lifting device. The lifting accessories should also be maintained properly so as to reduce chances of damage. Proper maintenance of lifting equipments is utmost essential so as to minimize chances of failure. They should never be exposed to bad weather condition as it deteriorates its mechanism and impairs functionality. Again, close proximity to hazards like overhead power lines, any other equipments or structure also increase the chances of its mechanical failure. The importance of lifting equipment has been recognized in most factories and construction houses. They not only smoothen out complex industrial operations, but ensure greater safety of employees as well. However, at the same time, proper management of these devices are mandatory as obsolete equipments may prove to be detrimental to the organization as their whole purpose may go futile.
