Link Bait Basics

Why should you care about link bait? Two reasons.

It gets you a higher search engine rank. And it builds traffic to your site – from outside the search engines.

Link baiting is about as close as you can get to the Internet marketing Holy Grail.

It’s in the Building

Build it and they will come.

Which is the hardest part?

It’s in the building. The secret to link baiting is in the building of the content.
Whether it’s a photo, an article, a contest, a video… whatever. Truly, link baiting is simply building something that is so compelling people link to it.

How do you do it?

Stay on Topic

First, think about what type of traffic you want to generate and what keywords you want to be under.

If your target is anyone and everyone, it’s a lot easier.

Why? Because you can go for general interest topics with your link bait…Like the article on eight diseases that give you superhuman powers, posted to a car dealership’s site.

Don’t know how many cars were sold out of it, but it definitely generated backlinks and traffic. And I noticed they ranked pretty high if you type in certain car-related keywords and their geographic location, too.

What does the general public like? Funny. Sensational. Weird. Gross. Even silly. For some, newsworthy.

What if, however, you want to generate quality links (and that matters more on the search engines) from your link bait?

How about quality prospects?

If you don’t want to just ratchet up your traffic numbers without a corresponding leap in results (a.k.a. sales), then focus your link baiting efforts on those sites and keywords that can deliver results.

Be Creative

Just because your field may not be wildly exciting doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with your link bait.

Humor still works, even when you’re serious about growing your business. But use it within the context of sharing vital, linkable information.

You have to find an angle that no one else has found. Then exploit it.
Do a PR stunt – something interesting and newsworthy.

Break a world record in your field. Launch a contest. Find a project that new participants must contribute to in order to keep it going – like an online paint by numbers. Or a quiz that reveals something about their career aptitude.

Be creative with your link bait, and you will see results.

Get it Out There

Once you’ve got something you are sure is bottled lightning, post it to the social networking sites, blogs, anywhere your prospects might be.

Here’s a tip: Give backlinks to articles you find interesting. They will hopefully return the favor.

You can also write a press release on your link bait. Then send it to the offline media as well, drawing prospects from the outside world. Give interviews to the media—they love that stuff!

Be sure to email all of your customers about it, as well. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how often it is forwarded… and to how many it is forwarded.

The more buzz you can generate, the better your chances of success.

What You Must Always Remember (& Never Forget) About Link Bait
If you only remember two things from this article, or anything about link baiting…remember this:

The posting and promotion of it are the easy part.
The secret is in the building.
Build good link bait, and they will come.
