List Building - Building Responsive Lists.

List building, list building, list building is all I seem to hear these days. One must build lists to be successful. However to me there are lists and responsive lists. My preference is to build a small responsive list and not just any old list full of free loaders. Agree?

It is currently quite fashionable to build lists with freebies and giveaways where one is forced to supply a name and email address to get the freebie or giveaway. Now how many of these customers have throw away email addresses or just delete themselves from your list when they get the free product. Now to me this translates into a lot of non-responsive customers on one’s list and thus little in the way of sales. You may have a big list but you also have lots of bounced emails and unsubscribed email addresses. Not for me.

How about instead of making it compulsory for the customer to sign up to get the freebie or giveaway you gave the customer the option of signing up or not? Would it work? The freeloaders would think you were nuts and grab your freebie. Hey but you don’t want them anyway so who really cares if they keep adding products on their hard drive. Maybe one should put them on a list that sells them storage space. Now let’s look at those who sign up for your list wouldn’t they be more responsive to future offers and not just grabbing your freebie. So does more interest mean more sales?

After running some tests on this concept I have noticed that I now have a lot less bounced emails and unsubscribed email addresses than I was having with compulsory sign ups. My list may be growing at a slower rate but my sales are increasing.

An idea worth thinking about.
