Well unfortunately because of our hectic lives and the noises around us, we are often distracted from effective listening. Often thoughts or memories and sometimes anxieties are all clamoring for attention within our head, preventing us from actively listening to people. Also the emotions attached to some of our relationships can often make it difficult for us to have effective listening skills.

The higher the listening skill level we bring to our listening activities, the greater the rewards. Often after having training is listening skills, people are surprised to discover how previously, inadequate listening skills had resulted in misunderstandings, mistakes and sometimes even a breakdown of important relationships.

By listening more attentively, we will increase our knowledge and our awareness of the world we live in. We will start to deepen our relationships with our partners, our children, our parents and our friends.

Unfortunately very few of us had parents who were accomplished at listening skills, so we don’t have role models for effective listening. Listening skills are rarely taught in schools and are not often taught in the work place. So were can we learn the skill of listening?

Getting a good book on the subject of listening skills and reading as much as you can about types of skills is the best way to start.
