The Little River Canyon Center is a visitor welcome center and educational facility adjacent to the Little River Canyon National Preserve at Sand Mountain, Alabama. Opened in 2009, the facility is operated by Jacksonville State University’s Environmental Policy and Information Center, in partnership with the National Park Service. Rangers at the park service office are available to answer questions and give information to visitors about the Little River Canyon.

The Little River Canyon is one of Alabama’s most scenic areas. The Little River falls 1,350 feet over twelve miles in its descent from atop Lookout Mountain. Visitors will see several waterfalls along the way, as well as spectacular views along the rim of the canyon. Popular activities in the Little River National Preserve include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting.

Visitors to the Little River Canyon Center can participate in a variety of educational programs, such as hikes, wildlife programs, workshops, lectures, and concerts. The Jacksonville State University Field School has a regular schedule of activities. Some of these programs are free and some require a registration fee. Hikes are offered on the second Saturday of each month at locations including DeSoto State Park, Little River Canyon, and Talladega National Forest.

The Little River Canyon Center is a green facility. The building itself is LEED certified and utilizes many sustainable design elements. The facility has geothermal heating and cooling systems which save $1,000 per month in utility bills. Many recycled and environmentally friendly building materials were used in the construction of the center. The facility has meeting rooms, an auditorium, exhibit space, and a one mile nature trail. A gift shop and an outdoor amphitheater are planned for 2012.

Several special events are planned this winter at the center. On January 14 there will be a Little River Canyon/Yellow Creek Ecology Hike. The cost will be $5 per person. Wilderness Survival 101 is scheduled for January 28. Hands-on survival methods will be taught by personnel from the National Park Service, DeSoto State Park, and Jacksonville state University. Cost of the class will be $10 for adults and $5 for children. Free Green and Gray Saturdays will be held on January 14, February 11, and March 10. National Park Service staff will present programs on topics such as recycling, energy conservation, green energy, and eco-gardening.
