Boca Raton Becoming a Serious Cultural Destination

Only a few cities can claim to hold the country’s greatest arts festivals. Arts destinations like Tanglewood and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina count Boca Raton’s “Festival of the Arts BOCA” on par with their contributions. In only its third year, the festival managed to attract artists like violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman with the Russian National Orchestra, writer Salman Rushdie and Indian diplomat and author Shashi Tharoor.

The ten-day showcase is held at the Mizner Park Amphitheater, organized by the Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park, a nonprofit organization. The Centre collaborated with arts management firm IMG Artists to gather the big-name talent. In some cases, the stars came to them. Violinist Joshua Bell previously performed at the festival and asked to return. Even in times of recession, sales for the arts festival have been impressive.

Boca Raton is in Palm Beach County, a municipality that supports local artists financially, making the entire area a cultural center. The festival adds to the area’s mystique by attracting big names and inspiration. But Boca Raton has a lot more to offer and these benefits have contributed to the festival’s success. The excellent caliber of institutions like Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University and Palm Beach Community College attract college students who often stay on after graduation. Businesspeople are also attracted to Boca Raton, explaining why so many Fortune 500 companies have moved their headquarters to the city. With no state income tax, it is hard for businesses to resist. The largest business park in Boca Raton, Blue Lake Corporate Center, encompasses 1.77 million square feet of office space and plans to double the size in the upcoming years.
