Long Airline Flights Use It Or Lose It

If You Don't Use It You Lose It-It Could Be Your Life

Why you should move and drink more on a long flight

Getting to far off lands may take flights of many hours; and what happens the time in the air during them may cause medical problems such as Economy Class Syndrome or Deep Vein Thrombosis which can develop after sitting many hours in a confined area without moving

To combat this, the airlines may give out exercise sheets and videos on how to keep their legs moving but very few people actually seem do them

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Clotting agents that initiate the formation of blood clots to prevent blood loss if the skin is cut and micro clots are always present in the blood these are balanced by anti-clotting agents to prevent them doing this if they are not needed

The micro-clots are usually removed by cells in the liver but if the balance it is altered in favour of the clotting agents, larger clots can start to form

If any break away they can move up and block vessels higher up in the body, possibly in the heart resulting in death

There are 3 main contributors to DVT in flight although there are other factors too

Air pressure in the cabin at altitude

Not Moving

Dehydration

Air pressure in the cabin is beyond passenger control and can’t be changed

Dehydration and not moving are both closely linked to deep vein thrombosis and can be remedied by the passenger

Other reasons can be age, physical condition, family pre-disposition, drugs, high blood pressure, women on the pill

Family history

Taking drugs for medical conditions such as high blood pressure

Poor leg circulation

Recent operations

These can be helped by advice from a medical practitioner before the flight

Not enough fluid during the flight

Not drinking fluid changes the balance between clotting and non-clotting agents and allows the clots to form because the circulation in the legs slows down

The blood can’t leave the veins so it thickens leaving the clotting agents the dominant factor in the blood

The surfaces inside the veins are usually smooth and free of defects to allow the free flow of blood through them, but this can change through age, infection or impact

As the blood passes the rough patch all it takes is one micro-clot to catch on it and this triggers an action where others join up with it to form an ever increasing mass in the vein-a blood clot

To prevent this the most important way is to actually move!

During a flight many people get swollen ankles

gravity holds blood in the lower legs where water separates and fills the spaces in between the tissues

You can sit and and risk your health or you can do something about it by maintaining as close to normal movement as possible

Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is
A tested recovery system
Physiologically based
Recommended by many endurance running and walking record holders

What are the benefits of Light Manual Muscle Relaxation?

No disrobing

No body heat loss

No complicated handskills needed

No equipment needs to be carried

No massage oil needed

Simple to do

Light so no contribution to muscle injuries

Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is an alternative recovery system

Normal Circulation

Oxygen rich blood is pumped away from the heart under pressure to the tissues of the body through the arteries and decreasing in size vessels called arterioles and capillaries

Oxygen poor blood is carried to the heart by veins which are more flexible than arterial vessels because to move it back to the body against gravity, they rely on movement of the muscles

When it reaches the feet, all the pressure has runout and there is none left to take it back up the legs to the body

To keep the circulation in balance in the legs, the same volume of blood should come out of the legs as goes into them and if not this can also happen

The ankles may swell up because gravity holds used blood in the lower legs and feet

Fluid separates from the used blood and seeps into the tissues spaces, as it can not be pumped away fast enough, the ankles swell up making it hard to wear shoes until it is absorbed by the body again

Making the most of the micro space you have when you are sat in the small space on the aircraft you have to work with the muscles not on them
