Your level of fear will be way out of proportion to the actual situation and this is the "fight or flight" response that is a natural human instinct. The human body cannot sustain this elevated level of fight or flight response for a long period of time and the attack will generally pass in a few minutes. There may be a series of these attacks, depending on the situation and it can be very draining both mentally and physically. Although a panic attack is not dangerous, it is certainly terrifying because the person who is suffering feels like they have lost control of not only their mind but also their body. People have been known to lose consciousness for short periods of time and in a situation where you are out in public, this can be not only disconcerting, but also very embarrassing. If you suffer from panic disorders, you should seek help. There are a wide range of treatments available, from psychological counseling and medication, to deep breathing exercises. Yoga and physical exercise can also help tremendously. Those who suffer from panic disorder may have underlying conditions that if treated may ease their suffering.
