Looking For Backcountry Skiing? Don't Forget Jay Peak

Vermont might not be a location you would normally think of when it comes to backcountry skiing. For the most part, people tend to think of out west or Canada when it comes to the freedom of blazing your own trail out on the mountain, but the truth is great tree skiing does exist on the east coast.
Growing up in Vermont, I got the chance to ski and ride many great ski mountains all over New England. As anyone who has experienced East Coast Mountains knows, we take what we can get. We have to endure every imaginable weather condition throughout the ski season. Sometimes it can make for great skiing, but often we have to deal with very icy and frigid conditions.

As a young kid, as my skiing experience level raised, I realized that in order to challenge myself and keep things exciting I was going to have to venture off the trail a little bit. All I would do is look for new areas to enter the trees and make my own trail. This was fun and exciting, but I always had to be on the lookout for patrol because venturing off the marked path was prohibited.

I’ve skied every mountain in Vermont at least once in my life and the first mountain I encountered that actually encouraged backcountry skiing was Jay Peak. Instead of roping off and patrolling certain areas they have actually set up designated areas just for tree skiing, or glade skiing. Jay Peak Resort offers 24 Glades, covering approximately 100 acres. Each glade has been trimmed of small vegetation to provide easy access and the most enjoyable backcountry skiing experience. It’s also important to mention that for every six glades Jay Peak clears for skiing, only one will appear as an actual trail on the map.

The backcountry skiing at Jay Peak is primarily targeted towards intermediate to advanced skiers, but there are glades just for beginners as well. One thing I can promise is Jay Peak does an excellent job at keeping the trails interesting and challenging. There is always something new to look forward to, some new area to explore. Also Jay Peak gets hit with snow pretty solidly all winter long. They are known for having the largest average annual snowfall over any other ski mountain on the east coast of North America. As every skier knows, more snow means more powder, which makes for excellent backcountry skiing.
