Lord Peter Mandelson- The Third Man – Lessons To Be Learned From A Public Speaking And Effective Speaking Expert
Mandelson has just published his memoirs in his book The Third Man and not surprisingly they have created some controversy. His effective speaking abilities were on display at Foyle’s bookshop in London. Times columnist James Harding interviewed Mandelson on stage and his performance was a brilliant example of both effective speaking and how to have an audience eating from your hand. Many lessons on effective speaking and public speaking could be learned from the evening. Let’s look at what contributed to his very effective speaking performance. There are certain key factors which lead to good speaking. Let us call them the paths to effective speaking. Path 1 – Be well organised and Path 4 – Words and language Here is how Peter addressed these two paths to effective speaking; Path 1 - He was well prepared and knew his stuff. When questioned he took time to think what his answer would be rather than speaking straight away. The gap was approximately 2 to 4 seconds before he started speaking and this gave him plenty of time to think before replying. An interesting point regarding being well organized for an effective speaking event was this. The interviewer explained to the audience that their questions should not be speeches or statements and should be short and to the point. If he hadn’t done this the evening might have run over time or, sin of sins, it might have been boring. It all ended on time and was a lively and interesting experience. Path 4 – To understand the words and language Peter Mandelson used, you neither had to be well versed in politics nor had you to have already read his book. This is effective speaking that communicates at all levels. For someone of his intellect, he still chose language which was easy to understand. Surprisingly he used self deprecating humour to good effect although he managed to make himself look good. This skill was probably the most effective speaking and public speaking skill on show. To summarize, two things I’d like to highlight that we can learn from Peter Mandelson are these; first for really effective speaking when answering questions from the stage, or in a presentation, take your time, stay calm, and give yourself time to think and secondly, keep your words and language at a level that can be understood by all.
