Loving Him While He Loves His Sports

Have you ever been in love with sports loving guy? It can be tough if your interests run towards the arts. My guy loves all sports. He really likes baseball and basketball but any sport will get him engaged. At least if it involves a ball.

Just watching sports on TV is not enough for my husband. He's no longer a spring chicken, but he still plays on a men's softball team. Playing on this team is the highlight of his summer. I've asked repeatedly why playing softball is so important, especially when the games are played in the heat of the summer. While he doesn't use these words, I've decided it's because it enables him to re-live his glory days. In fact it's the closest thing to re-living his childhood that he has. It's like playing on the little league team again, but without the grouchy coach and meddling parents.

And of course I'm happy to see him active, it's good for him. All day long he works a desk job, barely moving - except his face which goes from looking perplexed to frowning. So getting outdoors gets him moving. And a little vitamin D from the sunshine can't hurt either. Once in awhile he goes a bit overboard and has to pay the piper the next day but it always seems to be worth it to him.

Another nice side benefit is that it has inspired our kids to get involved in sports. We were blessed with two girls, but that hasn't stopped my husband from getting them into the game. Neither of the girls have a passion for softball. But one loves basketball and soccer and the other plays volleyball. Yes, we have run into those intense coaches and parents, but the girls have learned teamwork, good sportsmanship, and athletic skills that will last a lifetime. It's certainly better than spending hours in front of the TV or computer.

For our family, the sports events can often become a real family affair. The girls gather and we even pop some popcorn and watch the game. We often split over which team we root for but we all are just good friends when we are done. Sports events are typically much better family viewing than many other shows I see now on prime time TV.

If you're still looking for the positive side of your man's obsession with sports I have one last point to consider. You can always find a good gift idea. Sports gifts come in all shapes and sizes, expensive and cheap, collectibles and useable goods. My husband will never say he has too many baseball cards or ball caps. So I can always come up with an idea for Father's day besides a new tie.
