Lowering Heating And Cooling Bills

Homeowners looking to cut heating and cooling costs may want to get into the zone. Experts say properly using what's known as a zoned heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system can result in operating cost savings of as much as 30 percent.

Just like turning on and off the lights, depending on what room of the house you're in, a zoned system allows you to adjust the temperature in different areas of your home. Each zone of a home has its own thermostat to regulate the temperature and humidity in its area. By having the option to cool or heat different areas of your home separately, homeowners save energy and money on their utility bills and can more easily maintain a consistent temperature throughout a house.

Zoned HVAC systems are different from traditional heating and cooling systems because they provide independent temperatures to two to four areas or "zones" within a home. The systems use dampers to direct heating and cooling from a single HVAC system to more than one area. For example, a two-zone system has two dampers with each damper controlling the airflow to a zone.

In addition, the zone system features a controller that adjusts the dampers and HVAC system to heat and cool each zone. A zone controller connects multiple thermostats to a single HVAC system.

According to experts at Coleman Heating & Air Conditioning, zoning is especially beneficial if you have certain rooms or areas that are always warmer or cooler than the rest of your house. A zoned system allows homeowners to direct the system to automatically provide more heating or cooling to a specific area, without wasting energy to heat or cool the entire house at the same temperature.

While zoning does not actually increase the efficiency of your furnace, heat pump or air conditioner, it does increase the overall efficiency of the HVAC system by directing heating or cooling only where needed.
