Mft Continuing Ed Responsibilities

Every year, hundreds of Marriage and Family Therapists have questions concerning their license renewal and the corresponding continuing education requirements. Trying to work through the process of one's continuing education can sometimes be strenuous.

The expectations of each state will vary and can change at any time. Because of this, the need to keep on one's state board's rules is vital. Every state posts the up-to-date version of their rules and regulations on their website. This is a good source to check during each renewal cycle to see if there have been any changes.

There are a number of online providers offering CEUs for MFT continuing education in each state. Most providers are not approved in every state. Verify that the provider to be used has the appropriate approval to offer MFT continuing education courses in your state. The board approvals along with the corresponding provider numbers ought to be accessible via the provider's website.

Here are some suggestions on ways to keep yourself informed regarding your CE requirements:

--Document your state board's phone number, website address, mailing address, fax number, etc.

--Ask to be added to your state board's mailing list for any newsletters or other communication methods of updates.

--Find CEU Providers that offer links to each of the state boards and their corresponding information on continuing education. These providers may also provide links to the national board's websites from which they have obtained approval. These links should be listed on the website of the CEU provider. Most providers lack this feature. The one's that do supply a value-added benefit.

--Start early. Make an effort to begin your license renewal process well before the due date. This gives you the luxury of time to do your research to make sure you are aware of all of your current continuing education requirements and the rules that govern them. You can also use the extra time to select courses that will challenge you beyond your current abilities, and not just settle for courses you are already comfortable with. The last thing anyone needs is to be panicked as they scramble around at the last minute trying to get all of their required ceus completed.
