Macau Cheap Hotels – Finding A Decent Inexpensive Hotel In China's Gambling City

With its recent influx of luxury hotels and glitzy casino developments, Macau is increasingly seen as an expensive destination where low budget travelers have fairly limited choice in terms of cheap hotels and other low cost accommodations…

The reality, however, is very different, and whilst it is true to say that Macau tourism industry is trying to attract the well heeled and the high rollers, the city boasts a reasonable choice of cheap hotels that are usually better (and cheaper) than what you can find in other large cities around the region…

This article will take you to the best of Macau cheap hotels:

• Hotel Ko wah

With its great location on nostalgic Rua da Felicidade, merely a short stroll from attractions like Senado Square, St. Augustine's Church and other heritage sites, this popular accommodation looks like an inbreed between a decent cheap hotel and an upgraded guesthouse, and although it is mostly associated with backpackers, it boasts some very nice rooms that are just as good as in any other Macau cheap hotel.

The Ko Wah has been recently renovated, so all of its 28 guestrooms are in pretty good state, and they come with most of the amenities you would find in a hotel of such standard (or even slightly better), including air-condition, ensuite bathroom and the rest of it…

Add to this a friendly and helpful staff who really make you feel welcome, and you will understand why this place has become one of Macau's most popular cheap hotels.

• East Asia Hotel

There are two main reasons why you may want to stay at the East Asia, namely location and price: The hotel enjoys a great location on a small street in the city centre, just a short stroll from many of Macau's attractions and heritage sites, which together with its very moderate rates, makes it one of the most popular cheap hotels in Macau.

As you might expect from a Macau cheap hotel, there's nothing ostentatious about the amenities, and the staff hardly speaks English, but the guestrooms are fairly decent, both in terms of size and appearance, and come with most of the stuff you need , like air-condition, mini fridge, TV, phone and the likes, as well as a reasonable ensuite bathroom

All in all, if you're going to spend most of your time outside the hotel, and your expectations are in line with your budget, than staying at this Macau cheap hotel is certainly one of your best options.

• Hotel SanVa

This historic and atmospheric accommodation has a lot to offer in terms of character and charisma, but rather little in terms of comfort and facilities…

Priding itself for being Macau's oldest existing guesthouse, this hundred years old property is strategically located at the bottom end of nostalgic Rua da Felicidade, just a spit away from many of Macau's historic attractions and night spots, and although many of the rooms are not worth writing home about (with ceiling fan only and shared bathrooms), the guesthouse itself has plenty of ambience (and relatively low rates), so you might want to consider it after all (Moreover, there are rumors about renovations, as I'm writing these lines… but don't hold me for it)

If you do come here, try to book the balcony rooms, as they are the most charming…

• Ole London Hotel

The recently renovated Ole London is one of the most popular cheap hotels in Macau, and stands at the top end of the range of Macau cheap hotels: Meaning that whilst it may be just a bit too expensive for backpackers, it makes an excellent choice for budget-minded travelers in search of a decent accommodation at a fair price (Especially if you are planning to explore the city, rather than hanging around the hotel…).

Strategically located in the area of Porto Interior, just a few minutes walk from the city's historic attractions, restaurants and shopping, this Macau cheap hotel boasts sixty nicely-decked ensuite rooms that are quite comfortable (although somewhat small) and come with air condition, as well as with most of the facilities you can expect to find in a hotel of such standard.

Gamblers who want to visit the cluster of casinos around Hotel Lisboa, will not have to walk more than 15-20 minutes, or take a short taxi ride…

• Hotel Sintra

Although the Sintra is definitely a notch above the average cheap hotel in Macau, this very popular hotel offers special rates and reductions quite regularly, so it's worth checking them out, even if their rack rate is above your budget…

Fantastically located at the heart of Macau town, just around the corner from the Lisboa, and a short walk from Senado Square, the Sintra boasts extremely spacious rooms that are properly equipped with all the amenities you would normally expect from a semi luxurious or even luxurious hotel…

Hotel facilities are quite limited, but as long as your idea of a holiday in Macau does not include lazing around the pool, the Sintra might be the right choice for you.
