Magic The Gathering - How To Build A Good Deck.

Magic the Gathering is one of the best and most strategic card games in the world. Your chances of winning are better if you plan the deck and choose your cards well. Even if the deck uses cheap and weak cards, with good strategy and cards work with each other, it can win a deck filled with expensive rare cards.

Identity which format you like to play, keep in mind the banned and restricted list. Next, set a theme for your deck. Understand what does that theme mean to you. There are three basic or major archetypes of decks. Aggressive, control, and combo. Aggressive decks (it is usually called aggro decks for short) make use of cost effective spells and creatures to bring a lot of pressure to his opponent. Control decks' objective is to ensure opponent's threats are useless. Combo decks just have to make sure his important cards are there to win his game.

Second, ensure the correct amount of land for your deck. Decks that have high casting cost spells should put about 22 to 26 lands so they can play those powerful spells as soon as possible. However decks that have high number of low casting cost decks does not required the usual amount of 20 lands.

The next step is the most important part and it is called play test. Play test means you play and test how effective or how good this deck is. Play the deck against all kinds of decks to understand where is the deck's strength and weakness. Remember there are three basic archetypes of decks. Try playing against all three kind of decks. Note down all these results. You will discover there are a lot of common problems, or a different powerful play exist in your deck.

Next you have to adjust your deck to make it better. Take out cards that are ineffective or practically useless against most of the decks. For example, there is no point putting Circle of Protection: Green against a group of players that play white cards often. Put cards that help you greatly, for example since there are so many players that play white cards, maybe circle of protection:white helps. Or since there are players that uses aggro decks, bring in the mass control creature cards like Wrath of God or Damnation. This card choice give more flexible compared to Circle of Protection: White. Once you are done, play test again. Repeat these two steps till you are happy with the winning ratio against most of the decks.

To sum up what you have learn from this article. First you must have a theme in mind for your new deck, next find out the good ratio of spells and lands. Play and test how good or bad the deck is, then adjust it and play test it again. Repeat play test and adjust again till you are satisfied with the winning ratio. Bear in mind, Magic the gathering has no such deck that win all the time. Only a good deck that can help you win often.
