Magnetic Polar Shift To Happen Soon?

There are certain theories and predictions that suggests something catastrophic happening at the end of 2012. Many of these are pretty groundless, but some require further investigation. I will now talk about one of the issues related to the 2012 doomsday, the magnetic pole shift.

The magnetic pole shift is widely discussed and often misunderstood topic. This isn't strange considering all the prophecies and ancient texts that suggest something similar to the pole shift, or something that could be the result of a shift of the magnetic poles. One example is the great flood. If the poles were to shift, there may be dramatic climate changes, like great winds and floods.

Scientist believe that there have been several polar shifts in the past with a few hundred thousand years in between, the last one happening over 700.000 years ago. There are signs of a polar shift starting, but there are not sufficient evidence for determining that it has started yet. The next magnetic shift of the poles is actually overdue, so it wouldn't be unlikely that it has already started. These magnetic shifts are expected to lasts about one hundred years.

The effects of a magnetic shift of the poles can be quite devastating. The Earths magnetosphere will gradually become more and more weakened, and this will in turn cause much more solar radiation. What the effects of this would be is unknown, but luckily there are not any proof of previous shifts having caused great climate changes or extinctions.
