Maintaining Your Trawler The Easy Way

You've been imagining a long time about finding a nice used trawler or motor yacht to cruise the ICW and possibly the Islands; it has been your longstanding ambition. But you are brand new to big yachts and imagine you need to get a better understanding of what it takes to maintain her before proceeding.

Loosen up, everyone had to begin from somewhere. Before the Internet was born it was a learn-as-you-go affair; rarely was there some one around to ask. to assist those of you yet pondering the move, this article is intended to make the process a bit easier.

In this article I will answer the question, “What's involved with maintaining a pre-owned trawler ”. As I own and live aboard a 40 foot trawler, I’m going to give you the details based upon my experiences.

For starters, keep in mind that upkeep on a yacht will always be more the less time you use it. Boat systems must to be exercised. This list of course doesn't include items that fail prematurely.

Engines

Change engine oils after app. 100 hours
Exchange transmission oil every 500 hours or according to manufacturer
Engine zinc replacement each year or as needed
Engine raw water system cleaning/flushing every 3 years or as needed
New raw water impellers every 2 years or as needed
Change fuel filters every year
Replace engine belts as needed
Clean raw water strainers monthly or as needed
Check hoses and clamps as needed
Apply touch up paint as needed
Add biocide to fuel when taking on diesel
Polish fuel when needed

Electrical

Inspect sump/bilge pumps every 30 days
Check and exchange automatic switches when needed
Exercise electronics monthly
Replace batteries about every 6 years

Waste

Service/clean ElectroScan waste system electrodes monthly
Clean salt-water flush systems with muriatic acid

Underwater

Inspect zincs monthly, replace as needed
Paint bottom with antifoulant biannually
Inspect bottom for hydrolysis out of water biannually
Inspect rudder posts biannually
Inspect props and propellers at haul out
Check stuffing boxes monthly or install dripless packing
Exercise thru hull sea cocks annually

Decks

Varnish bright work annually
Strip and reapply varnish every 4-5 years
Repair fiberglass as necessary
Paint decks as needed
Polish stainless steel every 6 months
Clean and polish canvas and glass as needed
Replace canvas every 6 years or so
Clean and wax boat on an as needed basis
Inspect and replace dock lines and fenders monthly

Heating/Air Conditioning

Clean strainers monthly
Clean/replace intake hoses biannually or as needed
Charge system as needed

So there you are. It appears like a lot but it really is not. I check out most of the items automatically as I’m going about the trawler everyday.
