Maintaining Wrought Iron Railings
As decorative looking as they are they are a good form of security. Admittedly they are far from fragile but they do need some maintenance once they are installed. The main work that needs to be done to wrought iron railings is maintaining the finish. The condition of the railing is heavily influenced by its use and its location, but regular maintenance minimises the chance of rust building. Metals should be cleansed regularly and additional layers of protective coatings will not only protect the metal, but will give the railings a shine. When you decide to clean you railings ensure you use gentle materials, as anything rough as it can put scratches on the metal. The best thing to use is a wire brush and to follow these simple steps. Firstly, clean the metal with some soapy water, remove any rust from the railings using a light brush or soft cleaning product. Lightly clean the metal with a mild mix of water and detergent before wiping clean with a soft cloth. If your railings have an intricate design, or curves that are difficult to reach, use a soft toothbrush to clean away any dust and dirt. Once you have finished with the detergent, rinse the railings using your hose. Be sure to keep the hose spray light to avoid removing any paint. If possible, when the railings are throughly rinsed, dry them with a clean cloth as it if wrought iron is left wet for too long it rusts and this would undo all of your hard work.
