Make Moving House A Breeze

Moving can be a very stressful endeavor, but with a little bit of planning and organization, it doesn’t have to be. The biggest mistake that people make when moving is failure to plan.

If you know you are moving, get started ahead of time. Get lots of boxes. You can buy boxes at a moving store, or bankers boxes can be bought at an office supply store. If you are on a budget, hang out behind your local supermarket, they throw a lot of boxes out. Banker’s boxes are great because they have handles and covers, they stack easily, and are a manageable size. One big mistake people make is loading boxes too full, and then they are so heavy, they can’t lift them!

Have a system, mark your boxes according to what room they will be going into, and don’t forget about nightstand drawers, desk drawers, and other places where you store stuff, you don’t want to be surprised at the last minute.

Moving is a great time to get rid of old stuff. Think about having a yard sale a few weeks before moving, or just post stuff you don’t want on Craigslist or Freecycle. There’s always somebody willing to take your old junk off your hands, and it will be less for you to move later.

If you are moving yourself (i.e., using a rental truck), make sure you get lots of blankets to protect your furniture, and take stuff apart to make it easier to carry. Shelves can be removed from most bookcases and drawers can be taken out of desks and dressers.

When it comes to moving day, get as much help as you can. It’s a great time to call in all your favors. Provide pizza and drinks and make it a social event. The more people you have lugging boxes and mattresses, the less exhausted you’ll be at the end of the day.

If you’re using a moving company, don’t assume that they are going to do all the work. Have your stuff packed, wrapped and ready to go. There’s nothing movers hate more than to walk into a house where nothing is ready to be moved. Be nice to your movers, and they will be nice to your stuff. Finally, leave yourself time to clean your old place after everything is moved out. Consider hiring a maid service to do the job. It will be worth it when you get your security deposit back.
