Make Sure Your Office Signs Get Read

It's happened again. You showed up for the breakfast meeting at the office that you were just sure was well publicized. After all, you had signs up for weeks in advance. However, only a few people staggered in, so you're starting to think that you really need to do something about the office signs. You know that they won't be effective unless your colleagues actually read them, so how do you make that happen?

The first thing to keep in mind is to not let things get lost in the clutter. The more things you have hanging around the less likely people will be to read any one particular sign. This can be particularly annoying if the information posted is key, such as an important meeting. Periodically browse the postings and remove those that are out of date or duplicates.

Like all things in business, remember location, location, location. You need to place your office signs in key spots throughout your office space. For example, try putting something above the doorknob in the break room. Every employee uses the break room periodically and their eyes are naturally drawn to the knob as they open the door.

The next thing to consider is how the actual sign is made up. If your color and material is just like everything else around it, it will not draw any attention at all. The more important the event or reminder is, the more different you need to make the sign. You can accomplish this by using a different color or a larger font.

For even greater effect, you will want to make your signs are easy to read. Use fun graphics or even cartoons. If people are entertained by the sign, they will not only get the message intended, but will actively seek out and read the office signs.

Most offices have signs that stay in place. These are usually every day reminders and etiquette items. However, after awhile the message is diluted as the signs blend into the office decor. Change these up on a weekly or monthly basis to keep them fresh. Even if the message is the same, by changing the look of the sign you will redirect attention to it.

Of course, the more important your message, the more of these techniques you will want to employ. For a particularly important meeting, for example, make your office signs large, use a cartoon or graphic, and an interesting font. Also, make sure they are posted in places where your staff will notice them.

By paying attention to just a few things, you can make sure that your signs are having the impact you need and never be stuck in an empty meeting room again.
