If your family is getting ready to add a new baby to your family, there are many things you can do to get ready for her. Pregnancy is sometimes difficult, but it is also a wonderful time to get your house prepared for the new baby boy or girl that will soon arrive. If you invest in getting your home prepared for the new little one before the birth, then you can spend most of your time after your baby's arrival simply enjoying the pleasures of being a new parent.
Preparing your house for a new baby is a much larger task than just getting your baby's room ready. You need to re-evaluate your entire home, thinking about the things that could be dangerous to an infant and later, to a toddler. You need to place fire guards in front of every fireplace. You also need to make sure that medications (prescription and over-the-counter) as well as cleaning products and other harmful chemicals are locked and put in a place where a child cannot gain access. You will also want to make sure that furniture is secured to the wall through a safety device that is made for this very purpose. Children can get hurt or even killed when they try to pull up on a piece of furniture, because the furniture can fall on the child. Many pieces of furniture also fall when a child attempts to climb on it. It's a good idea to get your furniture anchored to prevent these types of accidents. It is also smart to move all electronic devices to at least three feet from the floor. Another great idea is to get all cords out of sight and preferably anchored to the wall with clips.
If your home has radiators that get very hot, block them off so that your baby can't reach them. Steer clear of rugs on slippery surfaces where they could cause accidents. When you're finished with those tasks, give your whole house a careful cleaning. Your baby won't just put things in her mouth; she will probably have her face on the furniture and the floor, so you'll want to reduce the associated risks.
If you plan on letting the baby sleep in your room for awhile, it is a good idea to still go ahead and get the baby's room ready ahead of time. If possible, avoid having older brothers and sisters share a room with the baby. Many parents traditionally have opted for light pastels in the baby's room, but pediatric research has shown that colors with strong contrasts can add to the developments of your baby's eyes and their visual processing skills. Geometric shapes are a great option, as are happy and friendly looking animal and human faces, which can be a source of comfort to your baby.
Though you certainly can provide the new baby with a room that has plenty of lighting, you'll also need to make sure that the room can be dark as well. It is important for the baby's eye development to have some darkness, so make sure you stay away from glowing decorations until the baby is older.
Many people get gifts of clothes and toys from friends and family. There are additional things that you will need as well. You'll require a suitable bed, a cradle, a dresser, a toy box, and a changing table if at all possible. Also think about adding a nice chair or glider so you will have a spot to sit and comfort baby.
Preparing for the new arrival during pregnancy will lessen the stress when the baby does arrive. It's also a great way to get even more excited about the coming arrival!
