If you do not live in a cave or under a rock and have read a newspaper or watched TV lately, you will know that everyone and everything is Going Green. This is really a promotion for Green, as he was only known as a color before everyone jumped on the environmental bandwagon. You can Go Green, Be Green, Think Green and more, all for the good of the environment and the Earth. Ten years ago the buzzword in the environmental groups was, recycle. Recycle, recycle, recycle has been beaten into our brains and many people today are recycling more than ever as a result of the marketing campaign from years ago. So how long do you think it will take us to really make our lives Green?
One industry is trying to take a more pro-active approach in the whole Green movement. This industry has and maintains many storage buildings all over the world. So, how can this industry make strides to make their properties more Green? These buildings are not necessarily the most attractive buildings on the block, but they do serve their purpose. The buildings provide areas for people to rent for a monthly fee. Architects and engineers have tried to make these types of building nicer to look at, but not much progress has been made throughout the years. So, now the focus is on making these buildings more Green.
What can this industry do to make their storage buildings more Green? It starts with simple things like, lighting and light bulbs. Changing over to the more efficient and lower energy consuming bulbs will help on the electric bill. Making sure that the office has well sealed windows and doors to help with the heating and cooling consumption is another good tip. Offering recycling bins throughout the property for the customers to use is always handy. Another great idea is to have good landscaping and greenery about your property. It is not only pleasant to the eye it helps Mother Nature as well. These are a few things that most every facility can do with their storage buildings as a small start to Going Green.
If you want to step up to the big time Going Green level then here are a few things you might consider on your current property or a future property. One of the first things that people in this industry started doing is installing solar panels on the roofs of the storage buildings on their property. Because this roof area is basically unused, it provides a perfect setting for solar panels. Not all parts of the country and World are sunny most of the time, so this option would be better fitted for sunnier areas. Another thing that some properties are looking into is wind power. If your facility is in a windy area, then your property might benefit from a windmill. This is a great way to harness energy from the wind and save on power. Both of these ideas can be costly upfront but the long-term benefits and savings will be paid back.
Storage buildings can be more Green if you want them to be. Look around at other industrial type buildings and see if you can get any ideas from them. Talk to other owners and see if you can get things done as a group for your storage buildings. You might qualify for a group discount or be able to help each other with projects. And remember, Go Green!
