Male Blushing And How To Deal With It

Blushing brides. Hot flashing women. What guy wants to blush in company like that? Seriously, it’s the thin skinned, literally, who suffer chronic blushing most often, regardless of gender.
Facial blushing is caused by over activity in the sympathetic nervous system. This is the stuff that regulates glands and organs, and constricts-or dilates- blood vessels. Reactions to stress, like anger, rage, or fear, are carried out by the adrenal glands and play out in the vessels of the face, neck, and chest. The closer the vessels to the skin’s surface, the more red the reaction. Some men are more sensitive to the opinions of others, resulting in more frequent blushing.

Sometimes the reason is medical. Rosacea sufferers often present blushing and red blotches on cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead as an initial symptom. Men, who are less likely to seek medical treatment than women, often end up with the most serious side effects. Tiny pimple-like bumps and the appearance of ruptured blood vessels can also develop on the skin. In more severe cases, rosacea can cause swollen, bumpy noses from thickening of the skin. (The late actor W.C. Field's bulbous nose -- now believed to have been caused by rosacea -- was mistakenly attributed to alcoholism. It is true, however, that alcohol can trigger rosacea symptoms.) Ocular symptoms -- including red, dry, and irritated eyes, pain, blurred vision, and, less commonly, inflammation of the cornea and possible loss of vision -- may also occur.

Men being treated for gout, or high blood pressure may be taking a form of niacin called nicotinic acid, which can also trigger flushing of the skin as a bad side effect and should be treated immediately.

In all of these cases the worst thing you can do is ignoring it. If self confidence is under attack, get to the origin, uncover the drama reliving itself out on your manly countenance. Usually, the pathway to embarrassment is set early in life when the opinion of our fellow paste eaters was the be all and end all of our existence. Ah, if we only knew then what we know now. Whatever you do, correct that reaction right now. The less you worry about blushing, the less you will blush. So you blush, so what.

Looking at it that way, it all seems pretty manageable. Find your trigger. Job interviews are the worst. Giving presentations. Making the “Best Man’s” toast. Medications are available called vasoconstrictors that reduce the blood flow. If stress, or a social disorder is suspected, there are also medications for that. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you try any course of treatment. Severe symptoms can be treated with beta blockers that actually interfere with the bodies delivery of adrenalin.

A healthy diet and exercise are always good advice to deal with stress and anxiety. Good friends you can get out and have fun with, positive self talk, and a self image that is okay with learning from mistakes without berating the owner, are all effective treatments to deal with those dips in self esteem.
