Manchester Gets Metrolink Go-ahead

Bolton West MP and Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly has said that the government has finally agreed to sign off millions of pounds worth of funding for Manchester's ‘Little Bang' Metrolink extension scheme. The funding means that the Metrolink's long-awaited expansion is finally able to go ahead.

This cash was originally promised to Metrolink in 2004, although it was later withdrawn over fears of spiralling costs. However, the government has now said that funding will be handed over in several parts, as they are satisfied that local transport chiefs can keep the costs under control.

Now the money for Little Bang has been handed over, work can begin almost immediately. The Little Bang extension to the Metrolink system will extend the existing tram network north, south and east to Droylsden, Rochdale train station and Chorlton. When these extensions have been completed, it is estimated that they will double the number of Metrolink passengers, ensuring 10 million extra journeys are being taken per year by 2012.

Ms Kelly said that the Metrolink provides a great service to Manchester. She said: "Metrolink has been at the heart of Greater Manchester's transport system for more than a decade. Carrying 20 million passengers a year, it has been providing an excellent service to local residents and commuters."

She also said that the government's decision to fund the Metrolink demonstrates their commitment to improving public transport and reducing pollution. She said: "Giving final approval to these plans reflects the Government's commitment to providing convenient, reliable and comfortable public transport. This ensures people have a real alternative to using their cars, and supports my aim to tackle congestion and reduce harmful pollution."

Officials are also thought to be considering a separate bid for billions of pounds worth of funding from the transport innovation fund, which would fund the Metrolink ‘Big Bang' network. The Big Bang network would see the Metrolink extended further still - as far as Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester Airport and Rochdale town centre. The Transport Minister Rosie Winterton is expected to announce whether the government will back these plans at the end of the month.

The Droylsden Metrolink line is expected to be complete by 2011, while the Rochdale line will be finished a year later in 2012.
