Marine Gps Unit – A Boater’s Best Friend

Navigating on land is much easier than navigating at sea. There are so many natural and man-made reference points to use. But if you’re boating on a large lake or the ocean, navigating by sight could put your life at risk.

And it’s easier than you think to get lost on a boat even with the coastline in sight. However, if your boat is equipped with a Marine GPS unit, your chances of returning safely to shore increases exponentially.

A marine GPS should be an essential for any boater. Having one will help you get your bearings, backtrack your course if necessary, and allow rescuers to pinpoint your exact location in an emergency. And a marine GPS unit is essential is inclement weather.

Many recreational boats have multifunction systems that already include a GPS, such as GPS/fish finder combos. However, if your boat doesn’t come equipped with one, then purchasing a hand-held unit is an inexpensive way to go. A hand-held unit is just as reliable and accurate as a built-in marine GPS, but its portability is an excellent benefit.

If you’re in the market for a portable GPS to subsidize your built-in unit, be sure to add a waterproof case to carry it in. Also be sure the case will float should it be dropped in the water.

Most manufacturers of marine GPS units offer a full range of maps for United States coastal waters, inland lakes and international waters. Each GPS unit will allow you to select the map of your choice.

Before buying, be sure to do your research. When it comes to buying a marine GPS unit, some are better for yachting and others are tailor made for those more interested in fishing.
