Marketing Your Yoga Career

Some yoga teachers are afraid that advertising and marketing may actually turn students off, or infect their own good intentions.

It is fine to think that way, but not very useful in the long run. Consider the following:

Word has to get out about classes and workshops before anyone will come. Expecting results with no outreach is a bit arrogant...

If you don't value what you do, who else will? Lose the guilt over charging money...

Plus, it's irresponsible not to let the community around you know about the ways you can improve almost any aspect of their lives!

Consider your marketing efforts as a form of service work

If teaching yoga is your career, then you are in the solutions business -- you have answers for stress relief, weight loss, fibromyalgia, you name it!

But can the people who need you even find you?

One of the duties of yoga teachers is to make our expertise available. We need to share ourselves -- our experience, skills, and training -- to be of service to people in our communities. You can be much more effective at that by doing a little marketing. And the money you charge? Think of it as an exchange of energy. You put your teaching energy out, let money be one way you receive.

In India, the swamis and other masters may not be paid directly by cash, check, or credit card, but they are still get paid. Every need is fulfilled by their patrons, whether the teacher ever sees the money or not. It's an exchange of energy. The swami feeds the community with his or her teaching expertise. And the teacher gets fed in return. It needs to be the same for you.

Traditional advertising no longer works for the yoga business

Very few people use the phone book to look for yoga. Same goes for print ads. They simply are not cost effective. Most people will look for the services you offer on the Internet. The trick is to help them find you!

I have spent a lot of money on advertising in the past -- newspapers, local health rags, and the yellow pages. Yes, I got a few students from them, but I lost much more money than I made. Ad representatives will tell you the more you advertise, the better the results. That may be true, but it's ridiculously expensive for the few results you'll likely get.

Spending more on advertising will not guarantee you more students. It is more likely to guarantee you spend money you'll never get back.

Now the good news. You can attract new clients much more effectively and inexpensively in other ways. Some strategies won't cost a dime, yet they work quite well.

Word of mouth will bring you your most loyal clients in the future, referred by existing loyal clients. The other thing to think about is your location -- not your physical location, but your location in Google search engine results when people look up keywords related to your services.

You don't even need a website for your business to be found online, though it would certainly help.

Here are five free ways to attract more yoga clients from the web

1. Write press releases for your events and services and distribute them on press release distribution sites.

2. Post your events to your Facebook business page, and be sure to invite your yoga friends. Not only will they see what you offer, but their friends will too.

3. Use as many categories as possible on Craigslist to post free ads about your private sessions, workshops, and ongoing classes.

4. Use directories like EzineArticles to distribute articles about your subject of expertise.

5. Make simple videos about your business and share them on YouTube.

With these free yoga marketing resources, you can bring in more yoga students and enjoy a rewarding yoga career.
