Martha Stewart Living magazine helps readers develop and sustain a passion for cooking, gardening, entertaining, decorating, collecting and home keeping. While Stewart dictates the magazine’s editorial focus by sharing her distinctive tastes and personality through fresh ideas, tips and advice for stylish living, she does not serve as the editor.
The magazine promotes a philosophy and dedication of home-made items and food rather than store-bought. Much of the magazines articles focus on crafts, home-cooked meals and a myriad of other do-it-yourself projects.
Martha Stewart started Martha Stewart Living magazine in 1991 after she wrote a string of successful books including “Entertaining,” “Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook” and “Martha Stewart’s Christmas”, published in the early 1980s. The magazine began as a quarterly magazine but is now published monthly.
By 1995, Martha Stewart Living sold 1.2 million copies per issue but was still not profitable. Also in 1995 Ad Age magazine voted Martha Stewart Living magazine its "Magazine of the Year."
The magazine generated several other media ventures in the early and mid-1990s including morning television's "Today" segments, books comprising of article compilations from Martha Stewart Living magazine grouped according to theme. The first two books were titled “Holidays” and “Special Occasions.” After the success of these magazine spin-offs, Stewart convinced Time Inc to fund a TV show based on the magazine, also to be called "Martha Stewart Living." Just like the magazine, the weekly show covers home decorating, entertaining, gardening and cooking.
