Martingale Versus Paroli Betting System

There are many betting systems invented to bring the money to the gambler. Some of them are simple, some other more complex. Some of them are used by a gambler without even his notice - like the famous gambling fallacy. In most cases you can use these systems with roulette, poker, sports betting and the rest of gambling games on the whole.

In this article I will try to explain the difference between two chosen betting strategies: the Paroli and Martingale betting systems. As you will see the difference is pretty great but the results from the mathematical point of view is always the same: it does not pay.

The Martingale system is a system of a negative progression. You should double your stake in the case of the loss. If you win you should return back to your original basic stake amount. So if your basic stake is ten dollars it might look like:

You bet 10 USD and you won.
You bet 10 USD and you lost.
You bet 20 USD and you lost.
You bet 40 USD and you won.
You bet 10 USD... and so on.

On the other hand the Paroli system is sometimes called the Anti-Martingale system. Why is so? Is is a strategy of a positive progression. It means that you have to increase your stake in case of the win. You should consider some other things too: for example the basic stake amount and how many times you want to win in a row until restart your betting with your initial bet. If the basic stake unit is ten dollars and you will restart your betting after 4 wins in a row, you have:

You bet 10 USD and you won.
You bet 20 USD and you won.
You bet 40 USD and you won.
You bet 80 USD and you won.
You bet 10 USD and you lost.
You bet 10 USD... and so on.

Can you see the difference? No one can say which of these systems is better - it depends on your personal thoughts and beliefs. The advice is just to check these systems yourself in practice and then choose the better for you.

As it was said before you can not expect these betting systems to be bringing you money on the long run. It is not so unlikely to lose 10 times in a row or even more. And what to do if this will happen? You probably know that bookmakers have some stakes limits and you can not usually bet (even if you have that amount of money!) 100000$ on the single event. So these betting systems are ideal if money amounts may be unlimited and the stakes unlimited too. In all other cases (so in real life) - they go nowhere.
